Overview

At RTDS Technologies Inc., our team of Protection & Automation Simulation Specialists and Engineers are domain experts dedicated to simulation, testing, analysis, and providing support for protection & automation applications related to RTDS products. Part of a multidisciplinary team, working closely with power electronics, hardware, software, and firmware engineers.

 

Position Responsibilities

•    Develop expertise in the focus application within power systems, including all related RTDS products – hardware/software/firmware.
•    Maintain and enhance knowledge of power systems software, integration and automation, industrial controls, PLCs, industry protocols (IEC 61850, DNP, MODBUS, IEC 60870-5-104, IEEE 1588), Ethernet systems, protocol analyzers and industry SCADA practices, as well as all related RTDS products.
•    Expert in system protection, protective relays and their applications, settings, and testing.
•    Prepare use cases and requirements.
•    Develop and document simulation cases related to protection & automation applications. This will require staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and techniques in today’s modern power systems.
•    Develop advanced models for applications using the RTDS simulation software tool, RSCAD.
•    Develop, evaluate, analyze, and implement protection & automation algorithms within RSCAD software to address complex power system simulation cases.
•    Significant coding work using programming languages C, C++, Java, etc.
•    Test new RTDS software functions and features during development and implementation.
•    Provide simulation support to RTDS customers (by email and/or telephone) as a domain expert in the application field.
•    Lead training courses held at the RTDS Technologies office.
•    Lead in the installation and commissioning of RTDS simulators at customer sites and provide instruction on their operation.
•    Participation in industry trade shows and international conferences related to applications.
•    Participate in technical meetings of professional working groups such as IEC, CIGRE, and IEEE to contribute domain expertise to standards development.
•    Write and present technical papers at industry conferences.
•    Travel (domestic & international) approx. 25%
•    Other assigned duties as necessary. 

 

Qualifications

•    Minimum Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, with an emphasis in the area of protection, automation and communication protocols, or equivalent experience
•    Minimum 5-10 years of experience in power systems/power electronics industry, preferred
•    Experience with Power System protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-104, MODBUS, and PMU
•    Experience with programs such as PSCAD, RSCAD, MATLAB, preferred
•    Experience with Time Synchronization methods such as IEEE-1588, IRIG-B, 1PPS, and SNTP
•    Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., C, C++, Java)
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in a second language will be considered an asset
•    Ability to travel
•    Strong technical training, speaking, writing, and customer service skills
•    Ability to independently manage daily work activities with minimal supervision
•    Capacity to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
•    Ability to work collaboratively in a corporate team environment
