The Engineering Manager will collaborate across the Optics businesses to develop and enhance critical technical capabilities that will drive ZYGO Optics business forward. The successful candidate will work closely with their team and business leaders to develop engineering talent, tools, capabilities, and processes, as well as work closely with manufacturing, quality, and program management to deliver high-quality product in a team oriented, customer focused, high-growth and highly technical work environment. We are looking for an accomplished leader with exceptional people skills, has developed teams, can influence, and motivate for maximum performance, and has excellent written/verbal and presentation skills. This is a dual role encompassing both technical leadership and individual contribution. As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading a team consisting of Section Managers, Team Leads, and Mechanical Design Engineers. This team is responsible for the mechanical design, development, and continuous improvement of production tooling for the manufacture, assembly, and qualification of extreme precision optics products.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for leading an engineering team to perform conceptual design, analysis, and research of new products and innovative changes to existing products using complex or novel engineering approaches and used advanced engineering tools such as solid modeling and FEA.
  • Exposure to multi-disciplinary projects, such as robotics, mechatronics, precision metrology and/or optical systems and developing the skillsets within the organization to successfully realize precision Optics components.
  • Responsible for resource management, working with Program Leaders to anticipate program staffing and skillset needs and develop/build team with the required skills.
  • Assess and develop current production methods and recommend process improvements. Lead continuous improvement projects to further improve the quality and efficiency of the organization.
  • Perform design engineering reviews and coach the team on new product development best practices. Review customer's design for manufacturability and develop methods to simplify manufacturing processes and reduce cost.
  • Support new business activities, provide process time estimates and develop tooling necessary for the manufacturing process.
  • Responsible for people management and career development activities including recruiting, onboarding, training, mentoring, coaching, and performance evaluation.
  • Travel as needed to customer locations to support design and program reviews. Attend meetings, seminars, symposiums, and trade shows as required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related technical discipline with minimum 10+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience in a high-tech design and analysis environment.
  • Minimum 3+ years of direct management experience in a technical field.
  • Knowledgeable in precision manufacturing for Semiconductor or Defense Markets.
  • Experience with MIL and ISO specifications.
  • Ability to multi-task and adjust priorities using strong organizational and time management skills to meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Proven technical achievements along with demonstrated successes in engineering supervisory and project management roles.
  • Possess leadership skills to develop, organize and execute engineering activities, including building teams, and assessing technical performance. Maintains a positive and professional working environment. Ability to inspire and coach individuals and groups to achieve career development and performance targets.
  • Experience preparing and executing detailed program reviews, developing, and managing engineering processes and standards, coordinating engineering services, infrastructure, and tools, planning and development of engineering budgets and staffing.
  • Possess superior analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, division managers, and peers in the business areas.
  • Familiarity with CNC programming lasers, punch presses, and machining centers.
  • Advanced Solidworks skills (or similar 3D engineering modeling software).
  • Advanced MS Office skills.
  • Successful candidates must be able to work in an ITAR environment.
