Position Summary:

This is a permanent position based in Pleasanton, California working on AMETEK’s products for electron microscopy under the Gatan and EDAX brands.  The Mechanical Design Engineering Manager will develop and lead a team of mechanical engineers, taking technologies and products through their entire product life cycle from concept through requirement, design, fabrication, test, and delivery.


The Mechanical Design Engineer Manger will:

  • Manages a team of 6 – 10+ mechanical engineers, plus additional onsite contractors as needed.

  • Manage the work activities, deliverables, and environment for the mechanical engineering team.

  • Interview and hire mechanical engineers as needed to build out the team according to the staffing plan.  Maintain mechanical engineering competence and state-of-the-art expertise.

  • Conduct annual reviews, provide feedback and career-path guidance.  Provide training and mentoring to support professional skills development.

  • Provide mechanical engineering oversight and guidance such that the team develops highly innovative solutions, while maintaining control over technical risks and schedule.

  • Align the team’s activity and progress to the goals of each development project.

  • Support and conduct design reviews per established protocols, determine and adjudicate on solutions for the associated challenges.  Ensure management of action items to closure., and of project risk elements, with appropriate reporting to project managers and senior management.

  • Support methodical root cause analysis and resolve non-compliance in part performance.

  • Perform mechanical design work such as CAD modeling, 3D simulations, as the need arises.

  • Inherit, own and develop the processes for relevant activities such as design reviews, release-to-manufacturing, drawing standards and review, etc.

  • Support team members in developing and maintaining engineering budget and schedule estimates


Mechanical Design Engineer Manager Requirements:

  • 5+ years related experience in the design of high-precision instrumentation.

  • Bachelor degree or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Must be proficient in 3D modeling, understanding and applying FEA simulation and analysis tools.

  • Proven experience taking a design from concept thru to manufacturing.

  • Process oriented mindset and analytical thinker with experience solving complex technical problems.

  • Exceptional project and people management skills

  • Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language, in both oral and written form.

  • Highly organized and persistent.  Proactively takes ownership of the relevant deliverables.

  • Able to multi-task on a variety of duties and work requests.

  • Able to handle changing priorities and maintain a sense of urgency.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior management experience.

  • Autodesk Inventor CAD user and Agile integration.




  • Will work with team members located remotely, including direct reports.  Expected travel 5-10%, mostly domestically, occasionally internationally.
