Summary:

Provides technical support in the production of germanium radiation detectors by growing detector grade, single-crystal, high-purity Ge (HPGe). Maintains and troubleshoots crystal growth equipment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Acid etches and loads germanium charge and quartz crucible into crystal growing furnace.

• Operates furnace to produce high-purity germanium crystal suitable for detector manufacturing.

• Cleans and maintains crystal growth equipment and associated etch sink/clean room.

• Prepares and documents zone refined ingots for use in the crystal growth process.

• Maintains record and log books on crystals and crystal growth machines.

• Assists in general mechanical and electrical maintenance of equipment, as required.

• Assists in quality control and yield assurance and inventory control.

• Must be able to work in a clean room environment.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employee must preserve work environment by not introducing any particulates external to the lab through personal habits, such as smoking, aluminum-based body products.

 

Education and/or Experience:
Associate degree (A.A) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and two years related experience or eight years of directly related experience.
