Job Description: 

Precitech designs and manufactures ultra precision machining solutions for freeform diamond turning, milling, and grinding which are used to produce optical lenses, mold inserts, mirrors, and precision mechanical components. Our machines produce rotationally symmetric, asymmetric, freeform, and sculpted geometries with form tolerances in the sub-micron range and nanometer surface finishes.​

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will significantly manage and direct the design, detail and specification of mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic components for use in ultra precision, computer numerically controlled, machine tools. Collaborate and partner with various internal teams to develop new product from inception to install, including marketing/product managers, application engineering teams, and manufacturing teams.​

Primary and secondary responsibilities will include:​

  • Design and develop Ultra Precision machines/systems and integrated assembly solutions using innovative engineering solutions derived from Precitech’s Applications portfolio, generating precision mechanical systems and tooling that are imaginative, thorough, practical and within cost and time targets. Major components include spindle, slide, air and oil bearings.​

  • Design to submicron level accuracy on integrated multi-axis linear/rotary motion and part holding​

  • Generate detail drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)​

  • Solve complex design or custom requirements via analysis of data and research of technical solutions appropriate to established requirements​


  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering field. M.S. or PhD is highly desirable. ​

  • 5+ years of precision mechanical systems design experience for high stability positioning systems.​

  • Significant experience/expertise using SolidWorks CAD software​

  • Proficient application of GD&T when designing and building high-precision tooling and fixtures, including linear motion systems​

  • Experience with analysis methods and equipment including: Finite Element Analysis, Vibration Modal Analysis, Spindle Error Analysis, mathematical modeling of bearings, etc.​

  • Highly skilled with algebra, trigonometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.​

  • Hands-on experience with metrology instruments.​

  • Hands-on experience with machining equipment (mill, lathe, CNC, etc.)​

  • Understanding of material characteristics and performances.​

  • Strong communication, presentation and negotiation skills are needed.​

  • Passion to win, the desire to collaborate and the ability to build influential relationships.​

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to assist with hands-on prototype design/assembly and on-the-floor support of transfers to manufacturing/assembly​

  • Excellent problem-solving skills through structured approach and solution generation in a timely manner.​
