AMETEK PDS (Power and Data Systems) is seeking an energetic, innovative, Hardware Engineer Manager to join our exceptional and growing engineering team. We design and manufacture advanced, high-reliability, aircraft avionics systems, as well as electrical, mechanical, and electro-mechanical components. The Hardware Engineer Manager position will be an in-office position at our Harleysville, PA engineering location.
The Hardware/Electrical Engineering Manager leads and directs a design-focused group of engineers specializing in analog, digital, and power electronic hardware solutions for aerospace applications. In this position, the individual will supervise engineers and apply hands-on technical expertise. The individual may serve many roles in the development of solutions including defining technical approaches, developing architectures, leading proposals, and planning/leading development efforts.
The manager role includes mentoring and maintaining a cohesive team to achieve goal-oriented organizational objectives, achieving product development milestones, and improving the skills, capability, and growth of the team members. The selected candidate will participate in employee recruiting, development, and evaluation.
The selected individual is expected to actively collaborate with software and mechanical engineers, program managers, subcontractors, customers, and certification authorities to develop solutions that adhere to a diverse set of requirements. Experience with the complete product development and production lifecycle is required.
The individual will be expected to manage their time and priorities effectively to ensure both project and organizational success. The individual must be a self-starter with strong technical skills and a proven history of technical leadership. Excellent communication skills and a desire to build and develop a team to tackle challenging technical problems is also a must.
This position reports directly to the Director of Engineering.
Responsibilities:
- Provides technical oversight and mentorship to develop team members, builds relationships, and meets productivity and retention goals. Conducts goal setting, periodic performance appraisals.
- Coordinates activities and assigns programs and projects to reporting engineers.
- Scales the team by identifying hiring needs, writing job postings, coordinating screening of applicants, interviewing on-site, and making hiring recommendations.
- Develops flightworthy embedded systems and architectures, signal interfaces to various sensor types, digital communications interfaces, custom switching power supplies, and solid-state power switching technology.
- Analyzes customer requirements and AMETEK objectives. Determines and negotiates scope, budget, staffing, and other resources required to accomplish projects, based on a thorough understanding of the technology involved.
- Develops written project plans, procedures, reports, technical proposals, work breakdown estimates, cost estimates, budgets, and compliance matrices.
- Performs trade-off analyses on designs and approaches. Employs technical expertise to support troubleshooting activities
- Champions hardware and system development processes. Ensures and manages team adherence to engineering and regulatory processes including configuration management, design quality, documentation standards, and safety.
- Interacts often with customers on hardware design, integration, testing, design reviews, and to support sales activities. Visits customer locations for on-site meetings, presentations, and other support activities.
- Performs necessary reporting, approvals, and other administrative tasks including weekly project status reports for senior management
- Provides technical input to program leadership during the planning and execution of engineering projects
Skills and Qualifications:
- 10+ Years of embedded hardware development and solid-state power experience
- B.S. in Electrical or Hardware Engineering; Master’s degree in Engineering preferred
- Prior technical leadership and management experience in an aerospace development environment
- Knowledge of ARP4761 guidelines and ARP4754 certification considerations
- Knowledge and past experience with requirements-based development and DO-160, DO-178B/C, and DO-254, MIL-HDBK-217 standards.
- Familiarity with CANBus, RS-232/422/485, ARINC 429, ARINC 825, Mil-STD-1553, and Ethernet, SPI, I2C serial communications.
- Experience with designing and testing various sensor interfaces: speed, temperature, torque, pressure, force, position, voltage, current, power, and phase.
- Technical understanding of PCB layout principles to optimize EMI/EMC performance
- Excellent oral and written skills and customer presence
